Om de zoveel tijd verschijnt er een boek dat laat zien hoe de crème de la crème van Parijs leeft. Inside Paris is zo’n boek. Ricardo Labougle, ontdekt door Min Hogg, de legendarische oud-hoofdredacteur van The World of Interiors, koos de interieurs uit en maakte de foto’s.

Spiegeltje, spiegeltje aan de wand
Een spiegelzaal die uniek is in Parijs, omdat deze er sinds de 17e eeuw nog precies zo uitziet. Een plafond met schilderingen van Louis de Boullogne, bekend van zijn werk in Château de Versailles. Adembenemend mooi. Stap binnen in het 17e-eeuwse stadspaleis van Joseph Achkar en Michel Charrière, beiden decorateur en kunstliefhebber.
Ze hebben dit vroegere bankgebouw in oude glorie hersteld. En met succes: de Franse overheid vroeg hen zelfs om het museum Hôtel de la Marine aan de Place de la Concorde te restaureren. Hun huis, dat al in verschillende interieurboeken en -tijdschriften te zien was, blijft fascineren. Een terechte opening van Inside Paris.
Een en al vrolijkheid
Of neem het huis van Mathilde Favier, VIP PR-directeur bij Maison Dior – en daarmee een van de vele bewoners in het boek die in de mode werken. Haar splitlevel appartement in een 19e-eeuws gebouw, ingericht door een interieurarchitecte, is één en al vrolijkheid. Kleur, een vleugje Maison Jansen, Madeleine Castaing en vintage vondsten van de puces. Het ademt Parijs.
Overal boeken
Alle huizen in het boek hebben verfijnde interieurs vol kunst, antiek en design. En wat Labougle opviel: overal boeken. ‘In bibliotheken, op tafels en stoelen, zelfs in de keuken.’
Maar kijk ook naar de verrassende details: een wasmachine verborgen achter vitragestof, met twee gordijntjes voor het glazen raampje. Of de schoonheid van blauwe opaline vazen tegen een cappuccinokleurige achtergrond. Het zijn interieurs waar, ondanks de schijnbare nonchalance, alles klopt. Een feest voor het oog.

Book Review: Inside Paris, Where Even the Washing Machine is Chic
Every so often, a book comes along that offers a glimpse into how the crème de la crème of Paris lives. Inside Paris is one of those books. Ricardo Labougle, discovered by Min Hogg, the legendary former editor of The World of Interiors, curated the interiors and captured the photographs.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
A mirrored room, unique in Paris, untouched since the 17th century. A ceiling adorned with paintings by Louis de Boullogne, renowned for his work at the Château de Versailles. Breathtakingly beautiful. Step inside the 17th-century townhouse of Joseph Achkar and Michel Charrière, both decorators and art collectors.
They restored this former bank building to its original glory, and with great success: the French government entrusted them with the restoration of the Hôtel de la Marine museum on Place de la Concorde. Their home, featured in numerous interior books and magazines, continues to captivate—a fitting opening to Inside Paris.
Pure Joy
Or take the home of Mathilde Favier, VIP PR director at Maison Dior, and one of many residents in the book who work in fashion. Her split-level apartment in a 19th-century building, designed by an interior architect, is pure joy. Color, a touch of Maison Jansen, Madeleine Castaing, and vintage finds from the flea markets—it exudes Parisian charm.
Books Everywhere
All the homes in the book have refined interiors filled with art, antiques, and design. And something that stood out to Labougle: books everywhere. ‘In libraries, on tables and chairs, even in the kitchen.’
Look closer, and the surprising details emerge: a washing machine discreetly hidden behind sheer fabric, with two small curtains covering the glass door, or the beauty of blue opaline vases against a cappuccino-colored backdrop. These are interiors where, despite the apparent nonchalance, every detail is perfectly curated. A true feast for the eyes.
