Deze hotspot ligt in de rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, vlak bij Gare de l’Est en in dezelfde straat als Bouillon Julien. ’s Ochtends drinken vooral oudere locals er hun petit café en lezen ze de krant aan de bar, maar al snel neemt een jongere generatie het stokje over. Toch kun je zeggen dat Chez Jeannette populair is bij alle leeftijden.
De charme zit in het interieur, de sfeer en – niet te vergeten – het eten. Vanuit een heel klein keukentje komen gerechten van een bescheiden, maar smaakvolle kaart. Een bouchée à la reine kost 7 euro, net als een onglet de bœuf, en een portie verse friet doet 5 euro. Schenk er een glas Côtes du Rhône bij, of ga voor oranje wijn – de favoriet van de bobo’s, zeg maar de Franse havermelkelite.
‘Soms is het voor ons bobo’s zelfs te druk, te hip,’ vertelde een vaste gast ons lachend. ‘Dan vertrekken we na een paar glazen naar een café aan de overkant, waar het publiek minder trendy is en het bier nog vriendelijker geprijsd.’
Maar wij? Wij blijven lekker zitten – voor de fijne kaart en de relaxte vibe.

Chez Jeannette still exudes the charm of the forties. It’s a favorite among twenty- and thirty-somethings—no surprise, as the French classics here are ridiculously affordable.
This hotspot is located on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, near Gare de l’Est and on the same street as Bouillon Julien. In the morning, mostly older locals sip their petit café and read the newspaper at the bar, but as the day progresses, a younger crowd takes over. Still, you could say that Chez Jeannette is popular across all generations.
The charm lies in the interior, the ambiance, and—of course—the food. From a tiny kitchen come dishes from a small but flavorful menu. A bouchée à la reine or an onglet de bœuf will only set you back 7 euros, while a generous portion of fresh fries costs just 5 euros. Pair it with a glass of Côtes du Rhône, or go for orange wine—the younger crowd’s, the bobo’s, favorite.
‘Sometimes, even for the bobos, it gets too busy, too hip,’ a regular told us with a laugh. ‘After a few drinks, friends often head across the street to a café with a less trendy crowd and even more reasonably priced beer.’
But us? We’re staying put—for the great menu and the relaxed vibe.
