Vanaf 15 februari loop je in het Kunstmuseum Den Haag door een veranderend Parijs. Kijk door de ogen van de impressionisten hoe de stad middenin de negentiende eeuw ingrijpend vernieuwt.

We denken bij het impressionisme altijd aan landschappen, maar de kraamkamer daarvan is echt in Parijs,’ zegt Kunstmuseumdirecteur Margriet Schavemaker.
Onder leiding van stedebouwkundige Georges-Eugène Haussmann veranderden arbeiders vanaf 1853 de middeleeuwse stad in een moderne metropool.
Een stad voor de rijken, terwijl de arme bevolking naar de randen moest verhuizen. De elegante Parisienne werd het symbool van deze nieuwe tijd, flanerend door nieuwe warenhuizen en theaters.
In deze periode van vernieuwing schilderde Claude Monet in 1867 het uitzicht vanaf het balkon van het Louvre. Hij keerde de klassieke kunst letterlijk de rug toe om het leven op straat vast te leggen – destijds een gedurfde keuze.
De drie werken die hij hier maakte vormen het hart van deze tentoonstelling. Ze tonen, samen met andere kunstwerken, foto’s, affiches, briefwisselingen en spotprenten, een wereldstad die we nog steeds bewonderen.
Maar ook tonen ze de keerzijde: de uitbuiting van de arbeiders die dit nieuwe Parijs mogelijk maakten. Het is het verhaal van een plek die ons blijft boeien.

Exhibition: A Walk Through the Paris of the Impressionists
From February 15, you can walk through a changing Paris at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague. See the city through the eyes of the Impressionists as it undergoes radical transformation in the mid-nineteenth century.
We always think of Impressionism in terms of landscapes, but the birthplace of it was really in Paris,” says Kunstmuseum Director Margriet Schavemaker. Under the leadership of urban planner Georges-Eugène Haussmann, workers transformed the medieval city into a modern metropolis starting in 1853. A city for the rich, while the poor population was forced to move to the outskirts. The elegant Parisienne became the symbol of this new era, strolling through new department stores and theaters.
During this period of renewal, Claude Monet painted the view from the balcony of the Louvre in 1867. He literally turned his back on classical art to capture street life – a bold choice at the time. The three works he created here form the heart of this exhibition. Together with other artworks, photos, posters, letters, and caricatures, they depict a world city that we still admire today. But they also show the other side: the exploitation of workers who made this new Paris possible. It is the story of a place that continues to fascinate us.
