De jaren 80 zijn helemaal terug – niet alleen in de mode, maar ook in muziek en het interieur. Van iconische ontwerpen tot eigentijdse collecties geïnspireerd op dit decennium, de stijl maakt een comeback in de interieurwereld. Valérie en Antoine, curatoren van de Parijse Remix Gallery die gespecialiseerd is in jaren 80-design, dragen een steentje bij aan deze heropleving.

Generatie in opstand
‘We zijn allebei eind jaren 70 geboren, dus we zijn in de jaren 80 opgegroeid,’ vertellen Valérie en Antoine. ‘Dit decennium had een grote invloed op onze jeugd en onze visie op de wereld. Politiek en sociale context drukten in de eighties een verlangen uit naar bevrijding en het doorbreken van gevestigde codes. Als generatie maakten we ons los van goede smaak en traditie en beleefden letterlijk de tijd van ons leven in nachtclubs.’
Mondiale rebellie
Het was een mondiale drang naar vernieuwing. ‘Of het nu ging om Memphis in Italië, Movida in Spanje, het Franse minimalisme van Philippe Starck en Gilles Derain, of het radicale design van de Pentagon-groep – overal zagen we dezelfde energie om los te breken uit de gebaande paden van smaak en stijl. Objecten hoefden niet langer mooi, burgerlijk en comfortabel te zijn, maar moesten verhalen vertellen. Deze beweging beperkte zich niet tot design alleen, maar raakte evenzeer mode, architectuur en muziek.’
Terug in de spotlight
‘De jaren 80 beleven nu zonder twijfel een comeback – en terecht! In woonmagazines zien we hoe designobjecten uit die periode een plek krijgen in moderne ruimtes, vaak in een speelse dialoog met objecten uit andere decennia.’
Muzikale revival
Die trend reikt verder dan alleen het interieur. ‘In de muziekscene keert het elektronische geluid van de vroege synthesizers terug, met een karakteristieke frasering die doet denken aan pioniers als Elli & Jacno. Ook op toonaangevende designbeurzen zoals Maison et Objets zijn de invloeden duidelijk zichtbaar: de collecties zitten vol objecten die zijn geïnspireerd op de iconische Memphis-beweging.’
Tijdcapsule
Remix Gallery is een galerie vol zeldzame designparels uit de jaren 80. ‘Onze collectie is een tijdreis langs originele stukken die niet langer worden geproduceerd. Als gespecialiseerde galerie zijn we gevestigd op de Paul Bert Serpette-markt, onderdeel van de Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen. Dit jaar vieren we – zakelijk en privé – ons 10-jarig bestaan en ons 20-jarig samenzijn.’
Van Parijs naar de rest van de wereld
De interesse in jaren 80-design begon als een typisch Parijse aangelegenheid. ‘Onze eerste klanten kwamen uit de Parijse modewereld. Geleidelijk werd het fenomeen breder en internationaler. Vandaag verwelkomen we met veel plezier nieuwe klanten van over de hele wereld – uit de Verenigde Staten, Japan en andere landen – die vaak helemaal niet uit de modebranche komen.’
Favoriete klassiekers
Vooral de creaties van ontwerpers zijn bij de klanten van Remix Gallery bijzonder gewild. ‘Denk aan stukken van Philippe Starck, Martin Szekely, Pierre Sala, Christian Duc en Garouste & Bonetti. Onze favoriet? Zonder aarzeling de Miss Milch-stoel van Philippe Starck, in 1987 in Japan uitgegeven door Idée.’
Eerste grote museumexpositie
Het Parijse Musée des Arts Décoratifs omarmde de jaren 80-revival met een uitgebreide tentoonstelling in 2023. ’Niet alleen hebben museumbezoekers deze periode ontdekt of herontdekt, ze zijn zich ook bewust geworden van haar waarde. Door enkele stukken uit te lenen, kwamen nieuwe klanten op ons af die gerustgesteld werden door het vertrouwen dat het museum in ons stelde.’
Toekomstperspectief
Valérie en Antoine verwachten dat de interesse voor de jaren 80 alleen maar zal toenemen. ‘Deze trend zou wel eens hetzelfde pad kunnen volgen als de waardering voor de jaren 50,’ zeggen ze. Voor wie zich wil onderdompelen in dit decennium, biedt de tentoonstellingscatalogus van Musée des Arts Décoratifs volgens hen een uitgelezen kans om de rijkdom van deze periode te ontdekken – een tijdperk waarin kunst, samenleving, politiek, economie en cultuur op bijzondere wijze met elkaar versmelten.

Remix Gallery (Paris): how 80s design makes a comeback
The 1980s are back – not just in fashion, but also in music and interior design. From iconic creations to contemporary collections inspired by the decade, this style is making a strong comeback in the world of interiors. Valérie and Antoine, curators of the Remix Gallery specializing in 1980s design, are contributing to this revival.A Generation in Revolt
‘We were both born in the late ’70s, so we grew up in the ’80s,’ say Valérie and Antoine. ‘This decade had a major influence on our youth and our view of the world. The political and social context of the ’80s expressed a strong desire for liberation and breaking away from established norms. As a generation, we distanced ourselves from good taste and tradition, living the time of our lives in nightclubs.’
A Global Rebellion
It was a worldwide drive for innovation. ‘Whether it was Memphis in Italy, Movida in Spain, the French minimalism of Philippe Starck and Gilles Derain, or the radical design of the Pentagon Group – everywhere, we saw the same energy to break free from the conventional norms of taste and style. Objects were no longer required to be beautiful, bourgeois, and comfortable; instead, they had to tell a story. This movement wasn’t limited to design alone – it influenced fashion, architecture, and music just as much.’
Back in the Spotlight
‘The 1980s are undoubtedly making a comeback – and rightfully so! In interior design magazines, we see how design pieces from that period are finding their place in modern spaces, often engaging in a playful dialogue with objects from other decades.’
A Musical Revival
This trend extends beyond interior design. ‘In the music scene, the electronic sound of early synthesizers is making a return, featuring the distinctive phrasing reminiscent of pioneers like Elli & Jacno. The influence is also evident at major design fairs such as Maison et Objet, where collections are filled with objects inspired by the iconic Memphis movement.’
A Time Capsule
Remix Gallery is a gallery filled with rare design gems from the 1980s. ‘Our collection is a journey through original pieces that are no longer in production. As a specialized gallery, we are based in the Bert Serpette-market, part of the larger Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen-market. This year, we’re celebrating – professionally and personally – our 10th anniversary as a gallery and our 20th anniversary together.’
From Paris to the World
Interest in 1980s design started as a typically Parisian phenomenon. ‘Our first customers came from the Parisian fashion industry. Gradually, the trend expanded and became more international. Today, we are delighted to welcome new clients from all over the world – from the United States, Japan, and beyond – many of whom have no connection to fashion at all.’
Favorite Classics
Customers at Remix Gallery have a strong preference for the creations of certain designers. ‘Think of pieces by Philippe Starck, Martin Szekely, Pierre Sala, Christian Duc, and Garouste & Bonetti. Our personal favorite? Without hesitation, the Miss Milch chair by Philippe Starck, released in Japan by Idée in 1987.’
The First Major Museum Exhibition
Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs embraced the 1980s revival with a large-scale exhibition in 2023. ‘Not only did museum visitors discover or rediscover this period, but they also became aware of its value. By lending a few pieces, we attracted new clients who felt reassured by the trust the museum placed in us.’
Looking Ahead
Valérie and Antoine expect interest in the 1980s to continue growing. ‘This trend might follow a trajectory similar to the appreciation for the 1950s,’ they say. According to them, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs exhibition catalog offers a unique opportunity for those who want to immerse themselves in this decade and discover the richness of the period – an era where art, society, politics, economics, and culture were uniquely intertwined.
